What to look for
- Solid rods and thick plates. Wobble is the enemy of a tall tower. Solid or threaded rods and 4 mm acrylic beat hollow tubes and thin plastic.
- Removable tiers. A stand that works as a 2-, 3- or 4-tier covers small parties and big ones.
- Tier spacing. Around 4 to 5 inches between tiers clears a generous swirl of frosting.
- Material for the occasion. Acrylic disappears and lets the cupcakes shine; porcelain and gold metal are part of the decor; wood reads rustic; cardboard is for one-off events.
- Cleaning. Porcelain and metal are the easiest to wash. Acrylic scratches if scrubbed, and wood should be hand washed.
